Pasquale Massaro was born in Italy in 1983.
His passion for music and for the bass instruments led him to study and use both bowing techniques, commonly called "French bow" and "German bow", and to delve into the early music performance on historical instruments.
Freelance musician, he has performed with Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Kazushi Ono, Ton Koopman and many other internationally renowned artists.
Active in chamber music as well as in the symphonic and opera repertoires, he has performed on many prestigious international concert halls in Europe, Turkey, Switzerland, UK, China, Hong Kong and Japan.
Selected by Maestro Riccardo Muti, in 2008 he became member of his Orchestra Giovanile LuigiCherubini.
He has collaborated, among others, with Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg, Orchestre National de Cannes, Brussels Philharmonic, Opera Ballet Vlanderen, Orchestra Opéra La Monnaie de Bruxelles, Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Teatro Regio di Parma, Orchestra Symphonica d'Italia, Accademia dell'Orchestra Mozart, I Barocchisti RSI, Europa Galante, La Petite Bande, Millennium Orchestra, Il Pomo d’Oro Ensemble, Il Fondamento, Orfeo 55, The New Baroque Times.
He has participated in recordings published by Erato Warner Classics, Glossa, Evil Penguin Records Classic, Ricercar Records, Claves Records, Paragon - Amadeus, MVS CDs and DVDs (R. Muti) ; as well as live recordings for Radio France, ORF Radio Wien and ORF Radio Salzburg, Polskie Radio, Musiq’3, Radio Klara, Radio Vaticano, RAI Trade - EUROARTS, Radio3, NHK Japan TV.
He obtained the Bachelor and the Master degree for double bass at the Conservatorio G.B. Martini in Bologna (Italy), Prof. Alberto Farolfi.
Moreover he attended the specialization courses for double bass at the Hochschule für Musik in Nürnberg (Germany), at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and KASK-Conservatorium Gent (Belgium).
He attended specialization courses and masterclasses held by David Desimpelaere, Korneel Le Compte, Alois Posch, Dorin Marc, Enrico Fagone, Giuseppe Ettorre, Alberto Bocini, Enrico Bronzi, Francesco Paolo Speziale, Patxi Montero, the conductors Eliahu Inbal and Michel Tabachnik, the double bass player and composer Stefano Scodanibbio (contemporary repertoire and improvisation), and by the tango music player Héctor Ulises Passarella.
He is pursuing with great passion the rediscovery of the performance practice on historical three-strings double bass and its authentic Solo and Chamber Music repertoire on manuscripts and treaties, with gut strings and historical bows.
His research aims to a better understanding of the original sound of that time and his attention is focused, in particular, to the music composed by Bottesini and Dragonetti, two leading representatives of the Italian School between 18th and 19th centuries, who were themselves the successors of a typical and even more ancient Italian tradition.
